Reference Software

It is recommended that Postgraduate students check with their supervisors on which reference software package is preferred in their discipline. As a rough guide, Reference Manager tends to be preferred by Medical and medical science related areas.

Endnote (END001)

This course introduces the Endnote Software package, a product designed to help researchers input, store, organise, retrieve and format lists of references in a variety of discipline specific styles.

The course will consider

  • Managing an Endnote Library (viewing, sorting, adding, editing and searching references)
  • Personalising your Endnote Library (customising the display and modifying reference types)
  • How to build up an Endnote Library (directly exporting references from online databases, importing references using filters, using connect files to search remote databases)
  • Reproducing references (creating standalone and subject bibliographies, using Cite While You Write with MS Word, using Footnotes, editing output styles)
  • Features to enhance the database integrity (linking to full text, term management)

Outcomes
By the end of the course participants should:

  • Be able to Manage and create an Endnote Library
  • Be able to personalise the database using a variety of features
  • Be able to input references into their Endnote library from database searches using a variety of means [i.e. by direct export export, import filters and connect functions]
  • Be able to link to non bibliographic materials i.e. images and full text
  • Be able to output references using different styles including the simple editing of output styles
  • Be able to manage term lists

Reference Manager: an Introduction (RFM001)

This course is an introduction to the Reference Manager software package. The software enables researchers to manage their personal reference collections, create clear and concise bibliographies through interaction with word processing facilities and integrate online searching from other library catalogues. The course will provide an overview of the key features, functions and capabilities of Reference Manager including inputting references, searching, adding in-text citations, formatting bibliographies using a range of styles and formats to suit and advice on maintaining the database integrity.

Some knowledge of database searching, e.g. Web of Science, would be useful.

Please note that this course is introductory in nature and does not cover creating output styles and editing templates.  The more advanced features of Reference Manager can be covered in an information clinic.  (See separate entry).

Reference Manager: Advanced Features (RFM002)

An information clinic is offered for researchers who wish to learn about the more advanced features of Reference Manager.

Advice can be given about maintaining the integrity of the database, through Term lists, and on how to organise and retrieve references. Guidance on formatting subject bibliographies and the creation of additional output styles is also offered.
